#DNLE Assignment #1 – Scoop.it, edcanvas, Learni.st – environments or education technologies which might be of educators‘ interest?

„Find 3 interesting learning environments or education technologies, and explain 3 positive aspects and 3 negative aspects for each (500-800 words total for the entire Assignment).“ That’s the task I was telling you about over there lately. As you are some faithful reader of my blog and not being interested in posts written in English, please ignore. There won’t be too many of them. 😉

Scoop.it, Learni.st, edcanvas, all three of them are kind of social bookmarking tools, and ones working (more or less) with visualization of content you are collecting. But let’s start from the very beginning.

Social Bookmarking is …

Women (and may be men) tend to collect not only shoes but all kind of „things“, since they are surfing the internet even and also hyperlinks. This being pretty easy. You bookmark websites of your interest via your browser, the more sophisticated browser user even groups them to create bunches of hyperlinks dealing with same subject. „Just as long as those hyperlinks (or let’s call them plain old links) are managed, tagged, commented upon, and published onto the Web, they represent a user’s own personal library placed on public record, which – when aggregated with other personal libraries – allows for rich, social networking opportunities.“ (Hammond et al., 2005) Such opportunities could be – compared to search engines – better/enhanced search results if it comes to special interests e.g. via tagging.

Excursus: Tagging

Tagging is basically assigning a peace of meta-data to a piece of information. As I did to this blogpost by the way. It helps describing this post to enable me to find and access it quick and easily lateron. Though tags are chosen personally often can be found some effect called folksonomie, an emerging form of shared vocabulary.

… and what is it used for in education?

It’s similar to thousands of other so-called web 2.0 tools. The more creative you are, the more ways you may find to use them for any purpose you’re up to, e.g. education. Just to give you an example. You may – together with your students – create a collection of high quality web sources dealing with a certain subject, those being easily accessed via smartphones thus supporting mobile learning of your students. Visualized bookmarking – a new generation of bookmarking services?

Starting with Pinterest bookmarking has become a form of arts. This as by bookmarking created pages are using pictures from the source and arranging them in an aestetic way.


(Schreenshot) A Pinterest for learning, that’s learnist. „Learnist lets you create learning boards that are essentially digitally curated silos of information. But since Learnist was built with education in mind from the start, the learning boards are easy to use in the classroom, assign as homework, or simply share on other social networks“, so Dunn (2012).

Three most positive aspects about Learnist are (1) that you may follow a board, (2) as a reader you may commenting on so-called boards and (3) to work together as collaborators to create a board together. The negative aspects are e.g. that (1) a learner may not be able to distinguish between important and less important information, als all of it is arranged in the same way, (2) learning by sources (texts) provided via a board is a pretty passive way to acquire information and (3) it’s suggesting that all kind of knowledge is already there and just have to be picked up instead of integrated into your own life.

(Source) „Scoop.it is based around what they call Topics.  A Topic is the page that they generate for you with a permanent URL and title. Each Topic is made up of Scoops.  The Scoops are essentially the articles that make up the content of your Topic. “ (Tschoegl, 2012) Positive aspects are as Tschoegl is mentioning (1) the range of sharing functionalities, (2) possibility to publish a magazine for colleagues or like-minded types and (3) organizing in one location materials that you might need across different situations. The negative aspects to be mentioned by using this tool as an educator are 1:1 that same already mentioned above.

(Screenshot) This one – I have to admit – I love best. Thus it’s easy to find three positive aspects: (1) You may not only share links but also YouTube videos, upload documents, share documents from your dropbox, or Google Drive documents all of them easily can be integrated into a „canvas“. (2) Due to the drag-and-drop function it’s pretty easy to use and (3) you may comment on every single ressource you share to put it into a context/explain why you choose to add. Especially for you I just added three sources dealing in any way with MOOCs. To have a look at just click here. Negative aspects are that (1) a collection doesn’t necessarily make the person looking at it reading the sources, (2) the collection’s just as good as the sources provided within and (3) it’s just that, a collection of sources. Not more and not less.
